Spilprisen 2022 - Best Kids Game
Rosa from Rouladegade is one of the most beloved characters in Danish children's television. A baker's daughter with a spy for a parent, Rosa has been a fixture in children's lives for decades. When DR Ramasjang wanted to bring her universe into a game, the world already existed in the imagination of every kid who knew her. The job was to make it feel exactly right on screen.
Working alongside Dwarf, who built and developed the game, Benny Box was responsible for the illustration style, character design and all character rigging and animation in Spine. The result is Rosa's Neighborhood, a creative building game for children aged 4 to 8, where players construct cake houses and expand a growing street with the help of Rosa and her neighbours.
The game won 'Spilprisen' for best kids game in 2022.
A world made of cake and character
The visual universe of Rosa's Neighborhood had to feel like Rosa herself: warm, playful, a little absurd and completely inviting. The illustration style leans into the edible logic of her world, where houses are built from chocolate, whipped cream and sweet dough, and every corner of the neighbourhood has something worth looking at.
Characters like Hr. Skæg and Onkel Reje each carry their own visual personality, with proportions and details that tell you who they are before they say a word. The design kept the same geometric and expressive approach used across the broader Ramasjang universe, while carving out a visual identity that feels distinctly Rosa's own.
Rigged for a living world
Every character in the game was rigged and animated in Spine, built to move expressively within a game environment that runs across older tablets, phones and computers without losing performance. The pipeline between Spine and Dwarf's custom framework meant assets could be imported efficiently and reused modularly across the game's three levels.
Getting the animation right meant capturing the warmth and humour of characters children already had a relationship with. The rigs had to hold personality across a wide range of interactions, from Rosa's regular appearances with advice and encouragement, to the residents making their requests for ever more elaborate cake houses.
